Autistic Burnout Support

Feeling exhausted from masking, coping, and trying to keep going?

Autistic burnout can feel overwhelming, isolating, and difficult to explain to other people. You may feel physically and emotionally exhausted, unable to cope with everyday tasks, more sensitive to noise or demands, or like you’ve completely lost the ability to function the way you once could.

Many autistic people spend years pushing themselves beyond their limits; masking, people pleasing, overworking, or trying to meet expectations that were never designed for them. Eventually, the nervous system reaches a point of exhaustion.

You do not have to keep forcing yourself through it alone.

I offer neurodivergent-affirming counselling for autistic adults and young people experiencing burnout, overwhelm, shutdown, anxiety, and chronic emotional exhaustion.

As an autistic therapist myself, I understand how difficult it can be to constantly navigate a world that feels overwhelming or unsafe. Therapy can be a space where you no longer have to explain or hide who you are.

What autistic burnout can look like

Autistic burnout affects everyone differently, but you may be experiencing:

  • Extreme exhaustion or fatigue

  • Increased sensory overwhelm

  • Difficulty coping with everyday tasks

  • Feeling emotionally numb or detached

  • Loss of skills or functioning

  • Increased shutdowns or meltdowns

  • Difficulty communicating

  • Anxiety or panic

  • Feeling unable to mask anymore

  • Withdrawal from relationships or work

  • Feeling “broken” or like you have failed

Often, autistic burnout develops gradually after long periods of stress, masking, pressure, or unmet support needs.

A therapy space where you can unmask safely

Many autistic adults have had experiences of feeling misunderstood, judged, or pushed too hard in previous therapy or support services.

My approach is gentle, collaborative, and adapted to your needs. There is no expectation to perform, make eye contact, or explain yourself perfectly.

Sessions can include:

  • Space to process overwhelm and exhaustion

  • Understanding masking and autistic identity

  • Exploring boundaries and energy limits

  • Support with self-acceptance

  • Reducing shame and self-criticism

  • Understanding sensory and nervous system needs

  • Working at a pace that feels safe for you

You are welcome exactly as you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is autistic burnout?

Autistic burnout is a state of intense physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion experienced by many autistic people after prolonged stress, masking, sensory overload, or unmet needs. It can affect functioning, communication, energy levels, and emotional wellbeing.

Do I need an autism diagnosis?

No. Many clients are self-identifying, questioning whether they may be autistic, or exploring late diagnosis experiences.

What if I struggle to talk in sessions?

Don’t worry, that is completely okay. Therapy moves at your pace. There is no pressure to communicate in a certain way and pauses or processing time are always welcome.
